Module 7 Reflection
One of the ways that I integrate questioning to promote higher-order thinking is to continue to ask follow up questions. I ask the questions-Why do you think that is happening? or How can you be sure? or What caused you to think about it in that particular way?
Another way to integrate questioning is through literature groups and using a modified seminar format with the young students.
As I engage the students in a K-W-L activity at the beginning of a unit, I am able to assess students' prior knowledge of the content and then can tailor my questions accordingly. Using flex grouping techniques assists me in scaffolding the activities and managing the students. Creating open-ended activities and project-based learning experiences help encourage deeper thinking. Using checklists and rubrics will assist the students in self assessing their progress.
When implementing a unit, at times the technology hardware does not function appropriately, creating a stumbling block for the unit. Sometimes, there are unexpected interruptions during the implementation. Further problems might involve my own lack of planning ahead and securing the materials in a timely manner.
To help me manage the unit implementation more effectively, I will create a checklist. I make lists for other things, but need to be more thorough when implementing all units of study to ensure maximum learning.
I created a document of creative ways to pair students in learning activities. Kindergarten students love working with a partner and my new document includes a variety of new pairing strategies.
